           BioShock Infinite is a game first- person shooter video game developed by Irrational Games and published by 2K Games . Previously known as "Project Icarus " in development , was released worldwide on Microsoft Windows , PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360 on 26 March 2013. Aspyr port to Mac OS X was released on 29 August 2013. BioShock Infinite is the third installment in the BioShock series , and although not a part of the story of previous BioShock games , this game does not have similar concepts and themes. The game concept and setting were developed by Irrational 's creative lead Ken Levine, who was inspired by both historical events at the turn of the 20th century , and the latest at the time the " occupy " protests.

            Established in 1912 during the rise of American exceptionalism , the game 's protagonist , former Pinkerton agent Booker DeWitt , sent to the floating air city of Columbia to find a young woman , Elizabeth , who was held captive there for most of her life. Although Booker save Elizabeth , the two are tracked by the warring factions of the city : Founders nativist and elite , who strive to keep the city clean American şiVox Populi , rebels are ordinary people . Booker finds Elizabeth to be the center of this conflict , and learns that she has strange powers to manipulate cracks in continuum space - time that ravage Colombia.

        The player controls Booker throughout the game, eventually working with the AI-controlled Elizabeth. Like previous BioShockgames, the player uses a combination of weapons, gear, and psychokinetic powers granted through vigors. Elizabeth's powers can also be used to help fight hostile forces. In contrast to the limited spaces of the underwater city of Rapture, the open-air city of Columbia provides for more combat challenges, including combat that takes place aboard the city's Skyline rollercoaster-like rail system. The game also features an optional "1999 Mode", harking back to games like System Shock 2 where decisions made by the player have a more permanent impact on the game.
